Ironman Langkawi 2006
The Ironman Triathlon in Langkawi held last week is one of the many official qualifying races worldwide that lead up to the finals in Kona, Hawaii. In each qualifier race, a limited amount of slots to the finals are up for grabs. Contestants choose where they want to qualify, and the crazy ones pick Langkawi. Here, the blazing sun scorches down on you for most of the race, which consists of a 3.8KM Swim, 180KM Cycle and ends with a gruelling 42.2KM Run. The average time to complete is 13 hours, but most pros finish under the 10 hour mark.
I was there this year as part of the Organizing Committee, and here is my report in pictures:

A man bending over.

Inside the plane. For the next 30 minutes, my motto will be “Don’t die, don’tdiedon’tdiedon’tdie”.

A man standing.

The Ironmen arrive.

Our friendly Aussie race consultants Gream (Graham? Sorry mate.) and Ross, and Kevin who is Managing Editor of Ironmanlive.com who’s here to cover all the action.

Lunch at Syook, located in the Langkawi Fair Shopping Mall. Syook is a cozy cafe that serves great food at great prices. Highly recommended, if you ever visit Langkawi.

Langkawi water.

It tastes as good as it looks. Only RM10!

Committee members each get a personalised shirt to wear on Race Day. As a gesture of thanks, I some made some very personal remarks about the person who made mine.

Teriyaki dinner at where else, Syook.

The stage, lights and sound set up. The sun is piercing hot. No sunscreen equals spontaneous combustion.

The catering crew.

A man walking.

Carbo Evening, the VIP table food. It doesn’t syook.

The VIPs (Vaguely Innocent Parties).
To be continued…
