This is quite common even in English speaking countries. The sentence may not be entirely wrong though. Noticed that the last sentence uses ” them ” which is actually referring to the ” personal things ” of the previous sentence. That’s how I look at it.

Of course the security guy is surprised if you have a seat strapped to you … it says take THEM with you, you need more than one!
